Insuring your dog

Increasing numbers of dog owners are taking out pet insurance to protect them against major health and accident claims.

Increasing sophistication in veterinary diagnostics, surgery and pharmaceuticals allows vets to provide ever improved care for your dog. Unfortunately, it comes at a price, and the resulting veterinary fees can become a financial burden for some clients. Pet insurance can give you an assurance that you have safeguarded against this possibility and that you will be able to provide the best care and treatment for your dog.

Insurance companies vary in their spread and type of cover, and we would advise that you compare several policies and read the small print very carefully. The type of insurance cover offered can affect long-term claims. We have found that insurance companies’ policies vary. We advise that you consider the following:

• Insurance cover may be for the full life of the dog and usually there an annual maximum amount.
• Insurance cover may be to the maximum value of a financial ‘kitty’ available for the lifespan of your dog.
• Insurance cover may only last for a year, after which an exclusion clause may be imposed.
• Check that veterinary cover is adequate for your needs.
• The size and terms of the excess.
• Ask whether there are any ‘fringe benefits’, such as money back vouchers for vaccinations, etc.
• Discounts for having several pets and for OAPs.
